The mastheads is the title of the magazine. The masthead of this magazine is done in a large, bold, high impact font to make it appealing and eye-catching to the audience. The colour which the masthead is done in is a bright red which is a vibrant colour and contrasts with the main cover picture as we see that Lilly Allen who is the main cover picture has jet black hair. Therefore this makes the rd even more impacting to the audience. The title ‘NME’ is an abbreviation for the words ‘New Musical Express’ which was originally a news paper which had the main intention of delivering new musical news to their audience as soon as possible, this is known as the word express means fast. The newspapers original context was of mainly Indie music, we can tell this as the music and bands featured were independent bands however this meant that they only appealed to a niche audience. This means that by being called ‘New Musical Express/NME’ the audience know what to expect. Also underneath the masthead there is a pug which mentions the rice of the magazine and also the words ‘New Musical Express’ to make it clear to the audience what to be expected and also how much. *
The main cover picture is an extreme close up of the famous singer ‘Lilly Allen’ who is well known for her association with the type of music which is often featured in NME. The extreme close up of her shows her wearing the typical clothing which is associated with Indie musicians- checked shirts. Also as an audience we see her with short dark block hair which is styled in a messy way to show her rebellious attitude which does link in with the Indie music. The image is on a tilt to suggest an unstable attitude not only in the image but also in the interview. Also she has a direct gaze which means she is looking straight out to the audience and enticing them to read the article as they feel she is addressing them. She is the feature of the magazine and the image of her has anchorage, the main cover line, which explains about the feature and entices audiences to want to read.
The Main Cover line is created by using a much larger and bolder font than the rest of the text used on the front cover. Also the fact that the main cover line is done on a black background with white writing makes the words stand out more and become more appealing to the audience. The writing is set out in blocks which appear unorganised and unstable and this represents the interview which is in the feature- unstable and unorganised. It also represents the key idea of Indie music being independent and dong things which are not what are expected of yourself so by making the writing look like an unorganised way it represents Indie music. The words used ‘Takes on The World’ have connotations that Lilly Allen is a very powerful and in charge artist who is about to do something which will change the world. Therefore the audience want to know what she is about to do as they believe it will effect them. Also a strap line is placed above the main cover line which says ‘I Can’t keep living like this, it’s doing by head in’ . This is a pull quote from the interview which entices the audience to read the article as they have had an insight to it already and will therefore want to read more. Also the fact that this is positioned in an evermore unstable way represents her unstable attitude whilst she says this quote and therefore makes the reader wants to know why she feels this way.
Also the Magazine has another cover picture, this picture also overlaps onto the Main cover picture. The Picture is in a bright Yellow box so it automatically contrasts with the dark black hair of ‘Lilly Allen’ which it overlaps onto. Also by being in bright yellow it attracts the audience to look at it and read the text. The text is mainly in black and in bold however three key words are changed and are done in w bright red to grab the attention of the reader. These words are ‘Bowie’ and ‘Credit Crunch’ both of these are words which the audience are familiar with especially seen as a Credit Crunch is what everybody in the audience can relate to. Also the words are written in capital letter with use of an exclamation point, and by doing so they connote importance to the audience.
